The better my business does, the more taxes I have to pay. Although I realize that I am fortunate to have a good income, it’s always hard to write those big checks. Nonetheless, a few years ago I made a conscious decision to write them with a smile on my face, rather than a frown. The key to making that mental shift? Consciously embracing an attitude of gratitude for all the benefits those tax dollars help provide to me, my family, my clients, and members of my community – from the highways I drive on every day to deliver my kids to soccer practice to the reservoir improvement project down the road from my house.
Take a moment right now to identify at least three benefits you and your family receive from your tax dollars that you may be taking for granted. Here are a few examples to get the ideas flowing:
- Are you grateful for the paramedic team who rushed to the playground the day your daughter fell off the monkey bars and broke her arm?
- What about the public transportation you take every morning to work, so that you can avoid fighting rush hour traffic?
- Or that stack of library books you’ve been reading to your kids each night before bed?
If none of these ideas put a smile on your face when you take out your checkbook on April 15, find something that does!
