I will always remember my firstborn’s kindergarten campout. All the kids were running around the campsite. Both boys and girls were chasing each other and throwing things and climbing on trees. When I looked for my son…

I found him in a tent with Jeff Smith’s Epic: Bone: The Complete Cartoon Epic in One Volume. All 1300+ pages were published about a month before he was born and it was the first book (of many) that he simply couldn’t put down. I think he must have read it 10 times before he left 1st grade. And, it is still the favored doorstop in his room even today.

I thought it was a beautiful thing and I never considered that he was finding safety in books while he was developing his ideas of friendships and becoming more comfortable with relationships.
